Chapter 3: Obsession vs Compulsion
We want to do various things in life, sometimes out of
compulsion and at others, due to obsession. Being obsessed with someone is not
a good idea, as it deprives them of their breathing space. But being obsessed
with work, provides expansion, but it too comes with a price, as it robs us of
our peace of mind. It is just like a battery operated top, which spins round
and round, at top speed, but comes to a halt, the moment the charge comes to an
end.
Humans cannot be tamed and if someone is being compelled to
do something or be someone, it leads to unhappiness. Compulsions are seeds to
sorrow, which grow into a never ending series of regrets and what ifs…… If we
want to create something healthy, it’s
better to be free from compulsions. The key lies in recognizing the
existence of an emotion and then nurturing it, both in work and relationships.
Although obsession can bring us movement, it can lead to exhaustion as well. It
depletes our energy reservoirs.
Hence, as we come to know, let us work to free ourselves of our
obsessions and compulsions and try to listen to the sound within giving us
instructions, what to be, what not to be. Let the seeds within grow silently and
bear fruit. Connect what’s already there, nurture it and let it grow.
